In Troubled Times

  • Westover Baptist Church 1125 Patrick Henry Drive Arlington, VA, 22205 United States (map)

Franz Joseph Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, originally titled Missa in Angustiis (Mass in Troubled Times), is considered to be one of the great choral masterpieces of western music. Haydn had to use a small orchestra of strings, trumpets, timpani, and organ because the woodwind players had been sent off to fight in the Napoleonic war. The minor key and militaristic feel of the mass reflects the uncertain time in which it was written. Presented alongside this mass is Ola Gjeilo’s Song of the Universal, an inspiring work for chorus and string orchestra set to a poem by Walt Whitman. The composer was moved by Whitman’s words, saying: “I love the unabashed optimism, exuberance and his unwavering confidence in our deeper humanity – all through the prism of a big, warm, beating heart.”
